Seminar: Right to the land – affordable housing in garden cities
Welcome to a seminar with Martin Large, an expert on garden cities, the 17th of February 17.00-19.15 at Första Långgatan 17 B, Göteborg.
We will discuss what is needed to develop garden cities. (The seminar will be held in English).
To participate you have to register here: https://www.hyresgastforeningen.se/regioner/vastra-sverige/aktiviteter/seminarium-ratten-till-jorden/?date=2026-02-17
Who and what determines land value when a city plans for growth initiatives and sustainable housing development? Who benefits from land value increases? Can the logic of the market be replaced with another logic? What would be required to develop 21st‑century garden cities — so widely desired and at a cost that is affordable, even for tenants?
We will listen to a presentation by Martin Large (founding director of Stroud Common Wealth Ltd., UK), an expert on garden cities and land value capture for public benefit, followed by a panel discussion where we explore the issue from different perspectives.
The discussion is part of the research project Non‑profit and Collective Housing Provision, in which the Swedish Union of Tenants participates together with Coompanion Göteborg Region and Östergötland, the University of Gothenburg through the Gothenburg Research Institute, Orust Municipality, and Egnahemsfabriken.
